Roasters Course - One Day Intensive (Brunswick)

If you love drinking coffee, and you love making coffee, learning to roast your own is the next big step. There's a certain air of mystery around roasting - not entirely undeservedly. While the process itself is simple enough, learning to roast is something of a journey down a rabbit hole, with more and more options and ideas opening up the deeper you go.. For the barista, cafe owner or coffee lover, roasting offers unparalleled insight into the science of coffee flavour.

Here at Padre, we consider ourselves seriously lucky to be roasting coffee for a living ? it?s tremendous fun, you get to taste your results and, as every roast is different, you never stop learning.

Our brand new roasting course, while designed with would-be roasters in mind, is full of useful and interesting information for anyone with a passion for coffee, as our lead baristas - guinea pigs in the development of the course - can attest.?

Because learning to roast is an on-going process, and all roasting set-ups (and, come to it, all roasts) are different, the focus of the course is on setting up a framework for beginner roasters to develop their skills, abilities and knowledge independently as well as while under instruction.?

The course is a one-day intensive, broken into two parts.?
The theoretical, covering all of the behind-the-scenes work of a roaster: sourcing, selecting and assessing the green bean and planning a roast,
and the practical, the execution and analysis of a number of roasts, putting the theory into practice.

Other subjects covered through the day are grading, defects and processing of green coffee,
cupping technique and sensory analysis,
roasting equipment, cleaning and safety and post-roast care for the coffee bean. Attendees take home a bag of freshly roasted coffee and the comprehensive Padre Roaster?s Manual. Equipment featured during the course includes our Proaster sample roaster and customised 15kg Roastmax.

In order to keep the course focussed and hands-on, numbers are extremely limited.?
This also means that, for two or more people, we can tailor a course to suit your interests and requirements.

We run the Roaster?s Course subject to demand, so to find out more or register your interest give us a call on (03) 9380 8225.
