Bumba Hill is one of Burundi’s most remote coffee-growing zones, sitting between 1,700 and 1,800 MASL in the Ninga Zone of Butanyerera Province. Here, 620 producers grow Red Bourbon on small, 800 m² plots, often walking hours to deliver cherry to collection sites. This year marks a milestone for the community with the installation of new drying infrastructure near Bumba, directly linked to Ninga Washing Station.
Cherries are floated and hand-sorted before being spread on raised beds for 25–30 days, turned frequently and shielded from rain and excess heat to maintain flavour clarity and uniform drying. Moisture levels are carefully tracked, with cherries dried to a stable 10–10.5% before milling.
The Bumba microregion benefits from rich clay-silty soils and a cool diurnal range, which slow cherry maturation and enhance sugar development. These conditions, combined with the varietal purity of Red Bourbon, give rise to complex, fruit-driven profiles with syrupy texture and structure.
Beyond the cup, our connection with Long Miles supports a greater mission. Bumba’s 2,094 residents face ongoing challenges — from water scarcity and soil erosion to limited access to healthcare and farming resources. Long Miles Coffee works directly with producers through field schools, training, and sustainability initiatives, including erosion control, intercropping, and organic pest management.
A key focus is gender equity: while women are central to coffee production, they’re underrepresented in leadership. Long Miles’ women’s empowerment programs aim to shift this — with savings groups, agronomy training and leadership workshops designed to strengthen community resilience from the ground up.
This is more than just a delicious coffee — it’s a powerful reminder of the impact we can have through meaningful sourcing partnerships.
